Distraction is often a factor in teen drivers' rear-end collisions
(Reuters Health) - In a U.S. study using in-car video recorders, more than three-quarters of rear end collisions involving a teen driver happened when the teen was paying attention to a phone, a passenger or something else other than the road.
When a phone was the distraction, the reaction times of teen drivers were markedly slower, and about half the time they did not brake or steer to avoid the crash, researchers report in the Journal of Safety Research.
"There have been several recent naturalistic studies of driving that have reported distraction to be present much more often than was originally seen in police- reported crash data," said lead author Cher Carney of the Transportation and Vehicle Safety Policy Research Program at the Public Policy Center at The University of Iowa.
"Research has shown that teen drivers are more willing to engage in distractions than are adult drivers," Carney told Reuters Health by email. "They are also overconfident in their abilities as a driver and tend to take more risks, such as choosing to be distracted at inopportune times."
The researchers used data from more than 400 rear-end collisions involving a driver aged 16 to 19, and captured by in-vehicle event recorders between 2007 and 2013. The devices were triggered to record video, audio and accelerometer data by hard braking, fast cornering or an impact force, and the study team focused only on the six seconds prior to a crash.
In almost 90 percent of crashes, the driver was not paying sufficient attention to the road ahead, according to the researchers. Using a cell phone, looking outside the vehicle, looking at another vehicle, personal grooming and reaching for an object in the car resulted in the most time spent looking away from the road.
For drivers using a cell phone, those who were texting had longer response times than those who were making a voice call.
"Teens aren't just talking on their phones anymore, they are texting, snapchatting and posting on Instagram, all while driving," Carney said.
There is no one solution to distracted driving, but "social norms regarding the acceptance of cell phone use while driving have to change, like they have for alcohol," she said. "A generation ago, it was socially okay to drink and drive - now it is not."
"And new automotive technologies, such as automated braking and lane keeping, should help reduce the crash risk associated with distraction when it happens," Carney said. "Additionally, parents need to be setting an example for their kids by not using the cell phone while driving and enforcing the rules for their teenage drivers."
Distracted driving is not a new problem, and adults may be distracted just as often as teens, said Rob Foss of the Highway Safety Research Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who was not part of the new study.
"It doesn't really look like teenagers are any more or less likely to use their phones than adults," Foss told Reuters Health.
Distracted driving is more like speeding than driving drunk, he said, because it can happen for only moments at a time.
"There's almost nothing we can do to control distracted driving, similar to speeding," he said. "Each microsecond you're making a non-conscious decision, it's something that everybody does. Everybody is distracted at various points in driving."

Funds for refugee driving lessons

Syrian refugees due to arrive in Dunedin later this month should have access to free driving lessons, thanks to the efforts of a local fundraiser.
Organiser Afife Harris said funds raised at a market day held at the Dunedin North Intermediate Hall yesterday would go towards $20 petrol vouchers for volunteers who wanted to help teach refugees about driving in New Zealand.
Mrs Harris said she came up with the concept after researching what European countries had done to help refugees there.
Many had offered cycling lessons but Mrs Harris thought driving lessons would be more beneficial for Syrian refugees arriving in New Zealand.
The event attracted 25 stallholders who sold items including clothing, books, food, art and antiques.
The call for stallholders was put out through a newspaper advertisement in The Star and flyers handed out around north Dunedin and at the Otago Farmers Market, Mrs Harris said.
It was not the first time she had lent a helping hand to those who needed it.
In 2010, she cooked a dinner for 50 people that raised $5000 for those affected by the Christchurch earthquake in September of that year.
Since she moved to Dunedin 25 years ago, Mrs Harris had raised between $20,000 and $30,000 for the community, she said.
She planned to organise further fundraising events to go towards the driving lessons.
They included a Middle Eastern cooking demonstration and Arabic language classes.
"I love to do this for the community - this is me.''
The event raised $600.
Forty-five Syrian refugees were expected to arrive in Dunedin on April 22, Mrs Harris said.

An Epidemic of Dangerous Driving: Bring Back Driver-Education
A recent report on the national news only confirmed what many of us have known: Driving has not just gotten worse; it's become extremely dangerous. Indeed, it's completely out of hand.
In big cities around the country, the response times for emergency vehicles have gone up dramatically such that the survival rates for those injured in accidents have been seriously impacted. In far too many cases, emergency vehicles can no longer make it in time to the scene of accidents or emergencies to assist those in dire need of help.
The dramatic increase in response times is not just due to the fact that there are more cars on the road, which there obviously are. Rather, more and more drivers are so self-absorbed and distracted that they don't see the need to pull over or they just plain refuse get out of the way so that emergency vehicles can get through.
Unfortunately, bad driving extends far beyond hampering emergency vehicles.
Daily I witness drivers who utterly fail to use their turn signals when they clearly should, for example when changing lanes at extremely high speeds on freeways. (They shouldn't be going super fast to begin with.) Or, when the lights turn green at stoplights, they use their turn signals at the very last second thus frustrating drivers and making it difficult to get safely around them. Such behavior is more than an annoyance. It often causes cars to swerve dangerously into other lanes of traffic.
Far worse are those who at the last second move without signaling across several freeway lanes in order to make an exit ramp. I was taught that one should use one's turn signals far in advance of changing lanes or initiating turns.
At the top of my list are those who speed up at yellow lights and run red lights altogether. Again, I was taught in driver-education that one should only go through a yellow light if one is in the middle of an intersection when the light turns yellow. A yellow light is not an invitation to speed up. It is a signal to come to a complete stop and wait until the light turns green again.
And, don't get me started on texting and distracted driving in general!
We desperately need "crash courses" [pun intended!] in safe driving. If we don't see the need to bring back and strengthen driver-education, then we are literally on a collision course with ourselves. Driver-education needs to be made mandatory.

That will depend largely on where you live. Transportation infrastructure -- at least in urban areas -- is undergoing a radical transformation.
Electric cars, cars that drive themselves, and cars you don't actually own, are just a few of the advances coming down the auto technology pipeline.
'We've entered into a period of enormous change," said Lawrence Burns, a University of Michigan engineering professor and former head of R&D at General Motors. "It's similar to what we saw in the early 1900s."
Here's what you might expect from your commute a decade or so from now.
The city: The sheer number of people living together in one place, coupled with the fact that they tend not to drive very far, makes innovation easier in an urban setting.
The most radical reinvention of the automobile might look like this: You need a car, so you call one on your smart phone. Within minutes, it pulls up. It's more like a pod with wheels than an actual car -- lighter and more fuel efficient. It runs on electricity, not gasoline. You don't drive it. It doesn't even have a steering wheel or brake pedal. A computer drives you to your destination -- perhaps in a dedicated lane.
"The future of the car is electric, and autonomous," said Levi Tillemann, a fellow at the New America Foundation and author of "The Great Race: The Global Quest for the Car of the Future."
You wouldn't own it because, why would you?
If self-driving technology takes off, it could reduce vehicle ownership rates by as much as 43%, according to a study this week from the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute.
"[A car] is an object that we spend a huge amount of money on, and we use it for two hours out of every 24," said Geoff Wardle, director of advanced mobility research at Art Center College of Design.

Much of the technology is already here. Google (GOOG) has a self-driving car and thinks it will be commercial in a few years. Apps like Uber enable car-hailing from a smart phone, and services like ZipCar offer access to cars as needed.
Converging all these things is only a matter of time, and most likely happen where there are enough people to support a fleet of roving vehicles. Also, the slower speeds of city driving tend to make automated navigation easier. Plus, cities generally have a higher concentration of younger, more tech savvy people willing to embrace new technologies.
This transportation model could become ubiquitous in other densely populated areas as well, like college towns or office parks.
In the suburbs, there may be less car sharing and more outright ownership, as garages offer a convenient place to charge an electric vehicle.
The country: These advances aren't as likely to make their way to rural areas, at least not at first.
Fewer people traveling the roads means it's harder to collect real time information on traffic and road conditions, which could complicate the roll out of self-diving cars. And taxi-like services are less profitable. There are also fewer places for electric car charging stations and greater distances between each one.
"We're still going to have a very high percentage of conventionally fueled vehicles," said Ginger Goodin, director of the Transportation Policy Research Center at Texas A&M's Transportation Institute.
But that doesn't mean there won't be any advances.
Lighter materials and improvements in engine technology mean even gasoline and diesel vehicles will be more fuel efficient. And natural gas fueling stations could become more prevalent in rural areas.
People that live in the country and commute into the city could use a mix of these technologies.

Goodin herself recently became a member of Car2go, a new car sharing service run by Daimler, the maker of Mercedes Benz.
She drivers her regular car from her house outside Austin to a nearby park-and-ride, then takes public transit into the city. If she's needs a car while at work she uses a Car2go Smart car.
"I was tired of the commute and looking for options" she said. "I'm much more relaxed when I get home now."

How driverless cars could collide with auto insurers
Evidence is mounting that the driverless car will become a roadworthy reality by the 2020s. While one often-claimed benefit of taking the wheel away from humans is that it will make driving much safer, what might that do to auto insurers' annual premiums, currently $209 billion? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a federal agency whose goal is to reduce car crashes and the injuries and deaths they cause, has just advanced the driverless car initiative with a letter to Google (GOOGL), redefining the term "driver" to include the computer that has control of a car.
NHTSA's extensive response to Google, which is now experimenting with autonomous vehicles on the road, indicated that the tech giant still has a long way to go to make driverless cars commercially viable. The agency rejected Google's claims that its car met federal auto safety standards, including a requirement for hand and foot brakes.
But NHTSA's action may be just the first mile of a long trip. Driverless cars have won the support of President Obama, who wants almost $400 million per year in funding to get them on the road. That goal was echoed by Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, who has said he'll fast-track the process and possibly even waive regulations to do it.
"This is a big step forward," said Celent's Light. "They are clarifying regulations while companies are still in the development stage. This will set a model for state regulations." States control most driving rules, and car insurance is under the jurisdiction of state regulators.
But car insurers remain skeptical that driverless cars will phase out their industry anytime soon.
"While the number of crashes will be greatly reduced, there is still a risk to driveless cars," said spokesperson Loretta Worters of the Insurance Information Institute, which represents the industry.
Among those risks are property liability claims if the on-board computer fails, or if drivers blame the equipment for an accident rather than their own behavior, she said.
According to State Farm spokesperson Rachael Risinger, the country's largest auto insurer understands that its "business of managing risks will adjust and adapt to this changing landscape. As connected and automated vehicle technology reduces or eliminates some risks that drivers face today, new risks are likely to emerge."
For example, while coverage for damage due to a crash, as opposed to fire, flood or theft, is likely to become cheaper, the higher cost to replace driverless car equipment, such as the rooftop infrared sensors that generally come with the vehicle, will raise costs when these cars are banged up.
Also yet to be resolved is how to modernize the current pothole-ridden highway infrastructure to accommodate driverless cars, particularly in crowded cities. "Where a car is driven, such as dedicated lanes for automated driving, also has implications," Worters said.
It's likely, Light admits, that it will be a long time before all drivers ever give up the wheel, particularly given the expected high cost of automated vehicles and the American "car culture."
Perhaps the best evidence of the need for insurance is Google's own experience. Its automated cars have been in nine crashes already, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Google claims that most were rear-enders caused by the other drivers.
But it doesn't mean nobody filed a claim.

A Brand Driving Lesson for Volkswagen
I placed tremendous trust in the Audi brand when buying a German car. It was a purchasing decision I didn't take lightly. My father served in Europe during World War II and escaped German bombs and bullets. I feared buying a German car would insult my father's service to our country.
My father didn't hold grudges, however, and encouraged me to buy an Audi Q7 because he thought it would serve me and my business well.
Despite having only a fourth grade education, my father recognized the power of brands to shape perceptions of companies who sell them, and consumers who buy them. That's why I'm so disappointed in Audi's parent company, Volkswagen.
VW, a top-selling automaker known for its German engineering, clean-diesel technology and strong market share since 1937, cheated emissions testing using software in 11 million vehicles with small diesel engines worldwide. By recognizing when the vehicles were undergoing emissions testing, performance was modified by the software.
After denying the cheat software's use for over a year, VW finally acknowledged its mistake. VW has been unable to halt the flow of bad news since mid-September. This week, VW is reeling over new accusations of large diesel engine emissions cheating, further spooking investors and intensifying regulatory pressure.
Despite more denials, the car company halted sales of seven large engine models in the U.S. and Canada, widening a scandal that already had forced the ouster of a CEO and prompted investigations and lawsuits across the globe. Larger diesel engine cheating tarnishes its prestigious Porsche and Audi brands too. For those who once admired these VW brands, it's a painful breach of trust even for those who are less environmentally conscious consumers.
The EPA ordered VW to fix the cars at its own expense, plus the company also faces billions in fines. Worse, VW could experience catastrophic, multi-generational brand damage if it doesn't handle this crisis of consumer confidence properly.
VW executives simply drove their company culture beyond the legal limit and got their brands rear-ended for it. It's vital for VW to reroute where their company is heading and restore such proud brands. To drive the brand cultural change necessary to do so, I offer this driving lesson for VW to put this crisis in the rear view mirror.
1. Put the top down: VW's CEO has already resigned. Other responsible executives must too.
2. Get inside and clean the interior: Examine how your corporate culture could embrace such illegality and change it.
3. Step on the brake: Stop the denials. Consumers demand authenticity and transparency today.
4. Adjust your mirrors and put on your seat belt: Look in the mirror and see how customers and media view your actions, and strap in because the ride will likely get more dangerous if you fail to adjust.
5. Start your engine, shift into gear: Do what Germans do best and engineer an efficient solution to the recall problem and put it in motion. Fast.
6. Tune in the channel, turn up the volume: VW cannot apologize and communicate enough to its customers and dealers. Share any and all progress being made.
7. Drive aggressively: Drive the organization to restore its cultural values and empower dealers to repair all vehicles as fast as if they were driving a Porsche on the Autobahn.
8. Take the high road and please, no short cuts: Public confidence in your brand is suddenly fragile. Integrity and quality are now more important than ever. Another large-scale scandal or recall will be catastrophic even if it's unrelated to the illegal emissions debacle.
9. Check the dashboard for warnings: Monitor social and traditional media activity, and track customer and prospect perceptions to gain insights that inform brand communications messaging.
10. Drive it home: Keep apologizing and make amends by rewarding customers who stay loyal with trade-in incentives to offset the lower resale value of effected models. Handle this recall crisis efficiently and use this incident as fuel to advance green vehicle technology across your divisions.
German engineering got VW into this predicament. Only German ingenuity and integrity can bring VW out of it.

Giants Football Player Accused Of Attempted Rape
Police are investigating claims that Giants football player Jay Bromley attempted to rape a woman he met on Instagram.
The incident is alleged to have occurred early Saturday, after 23-year-old Bromley picked up the 26-year-old woman and brought her to the Hyatt Herald Square Hotel in New York City.
The New York Daily News reports:
Once in the room, the woman performed oral sex on Bromley but then didnt want to go further, sources said.
At that point, something took place that she didnt want to take place, a police source with knowledge of the investigation said.
The woman claimed that Bromley tried to rape her.
According to police reports,the woman jumped on the hood of Bromley's car when he refused to take her home. He allegedly kept driving and the woman fell, injuring her knees and legs.
She was taken to Roosevelt Hospital where a rape kit test was being performed at about 4 a.m., the New York Post reports.
Bromley, a defensive end who signed with the Giants in 2014, hasn't yet been charged. The NFL is aware of the incident, according to ESPN.
"We are aware of the situation and will continue to monitor it," the Giants said in a statement. "We have notified the league office per the league's protocol. We will have no further comment as we understand this is an ongoing investigation."

A.) Aim high is steering keeps you centered in your lane and gives you an ability to predict changes in the traffic ahead of you. Try looking forward far ahead and reading the traffic on the road. Looking down at the road or staring directly at the vehicle in front of you can result in being to close to the edge of the road, too close to the center line, or not give you enough time to react or adapt to rapidly changing traffic and/or road conditions..
G.) Get the big picture means a driver sees and can avoid potentially dangerous situations on the road ahead way before they become an issue. Identifying and understanding your surroundings on the road and potential problems before they occur will provide time for reacting safely to what you see. Getting the big picture helps us to see opportunities we would miss if we were not paying attention.
K.) Keep your eyes moving suggests that by watching what is ahead, next to. and behind you gives you more control of your surroundings in your vehicle. This give you time to prepare for vehicles that are passing, getting ready to possibly move into your path, or just being aware of who is around you on the road.
L.) Leave yourself an out is a defensive driving technique of always trying to maintain an acceptable speed and distance from other vehicles as an escape tactic, if an unexpected accident occurs. In driving usually the only space you can assure yourself of is that on your right and that directly in front of you. Plus, by ensuring that your at-least one car length away from the cars around you, or at least 2-seconds ahead of you, you now have a safety zone and room to maneuver.
M.) Make sure they see you implies making eye-contact, using your signals, and any form of communication to let our drivers aware that you are here. It is very rare that someone will pull out in front of you and cut you off, if they see you on the road. Most drivers are courteous and will acknowledge your presence on the road. By using your signal lights, headlights, horn and even making eye contact are a few ways to make driving safer and easier.
Safe driving has been and always will be about paying attention. Set your mirrors so you can see into the lanes next to you. Save phone conversations after you have stopped. Never tail-gate other cars. A few of these rules should help you and/or that person who will be driving very soon. Learning to drive or driving carelessly is easy. Applying the skills necessary to become a safe driver is easier said than done. Although, paying attention to details on the road can save you money, save your car and save your life.

How to Pass Your Driver's Licence Test the First Time
I was advised that sometimes the official will ask you to do what's known as a starting procedure. This procedure is simple and similar to the internal check. I wasn't asked this by my examiner.
i. The handbrake is on.
ii. The car is in neutral.
iii. Turn the key until the dash lights up, and say that there are no warning lights on (hopefully!).
iv. Turn the car on and check that there are still no warning lights.
v. State whether the car has a manual or an automatic choke (automatics are much less hassle, especially in winter when it's cold).
There are a lot more things that can go wrong here. There is a minimum time you have to stay on the road, but they can take you for longer. You will have to drive around your local area or where the traffic department is located.
i. Stop the whole car behind the white line at stop streets, not just the wheels.
ii. Before turns, check your mirror and blind spot, indicate, then check the blind spot again before turning the wheel.
iii. Don't cross your hands, rather use the shuffle method for turning the wheel. They'll take one point off for crossing hands.
iv. Try not to stall. They take one point off for stalling each time.
v. Don't let the car roll anywhere at any time. This will lead to a fail.
vi. When stopping, use the foot brake, keeping your hands on the steering wheel until you come to a full stop, clutch in before you stall, then handbrake.
vii. Do a full observation after stopping and using the handbrake before taking off (mirror, right blind spot, mirror again and left blind spot).
viii. When on the road, check your mirror and then look right and left at any intersections, business entrances etc. Driveways are the exception to this rule.

If you're worried about what your teen drivers are doing on the road, the market is ready to take your money for software-based GPS programs and apps that work through cell phones to act as surrogate nannies.
American parents worry about everything having to do with their kids, and these "safe kid" vendors have plenty of scary stats to fuel the fear about teen drivers -- car crashes are the leading cause of death for American teens; 500,000 teenagers are killed or injured in accidents every year.
But actually the number of teen car-related accidents is down, and the main reason has nothing to do with cellphone spying. Thank state laws that don't let very young drivers hit the highway with that ultimate distraction -- their friends.
Thanks the laws, not apps
Insurance industry statistics show that 16- and 17-year-old driver death rates go up every time an additional passenger is added. According to AAA, the drop in fatal accidents is due largely to improved driver education (including warnings about the risk of drunken or drug-enhanced driving), more seat belt use, and increasing restrictions on young motorists -- so-called graduated driver licensing (GDL).
From 1996 to 2008, fatal crashes involving 16- or 17-year-old drivers fell by half, says the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Teenagers are also less interested in driving early than they used to be. The current teen death toll is about 6,000 per year.
Lots of choices, and only a few are free
But the technology is ready, and anxious parents are ready to buy it. For $249, the Cadillac of apps, Mobile Teen GPS, will monitor how fast your kids are driving, find where they are in real time, and record if they're visiting "unapproved locations." There's a $29 a month data plan, but the manufacturer notes that you may be eligible for insurance discounts.
iGuardian Teen is a lot cheaper, at a one-time $19.95, and it does things like prevent your texting and making calls while on the move. It will also record video through a dash camera in five-minute loops, and automatically upload them in case of an accident.
GM's OnStar now offers a Family Link pilot program for 10,000 family subscribers that will display a map of exactly where your teen driver is, and it's likely to expand to include arrival/departure "alerts" and speed data.
But you don't necessarily need to pay through the nose for peace of mind. Safe Driver is a free iPhone app and motion control to tap into the GPS and emit beeps to warn speeding drivers. The pop star Justin Bieber is the pitchman for a free PhoneGuard DriveSafe app (for BlackBerry and Android phones) launched last month that disables your kid's phone texting, email and keyboard functions at speeds above 10 mph. If you want to pay, you can, because "a larger application suite" is coming in September for $29 a year.
Outsmarting the tech?
Teenagers are often smarter than their parents about technology, so it's easy to imagine them outsmarting these apps. But they can't get around GDL laws, which since the 90s have divided young drivers into learner, intermediate and full privilege stages. These days, 30 states (and DC) outright ban cell use by novice drivers, and 48 restrict nighttime driving. The big one is that 44 states (and DC) put limitations on the passengers teen drivers can carry through the intermediate stage. In effect, it often means that the most vulnerable early license holders have to drive with relatives, not peers. Frankly, that works.
Some of the apps might be useful, especially if parents are too busy to ask timely questions and keep in contact. But the iron rule of GDL laws, which threaten to suspend or revoke the freedom represented by that first driver's license, do more to keep your kids safe. Nobody likes being grounded.

TUESDAY, Nov. 11 (HealthDay News) -- Poor police training, a lack of educational materials, and meager data collection are hindering efforts to increase awareness about the dangers of drowsy driving in the United States and aggressively tackle the problem, a new report finds.
The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) released its findings Tuesday as part of Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, Nov. 10-16.
"States across the nation seem to be trying to increase their efforts to combat drowsy driving, especially in the area of graduated licensing laws for young drivers," CEO David Cloud said in a sleep foundation news release. Only 13 states and the District of Columbia provide police training about the effects of fatigue on driving performance, while five other states provide limited or sporadic training on the issue.Only one state, New Jersey, has a specific law for fatal crashes caused by drivers who fall asleep. However, all but two states (Iowa and Maine) said they have existing laws that enable them to charge a drowsy driver who causes a fatal crash.Only 17 states require drowsy driving information to be included in driver education programs.Information about drowsy driving is included in 43 states' driver's license manuals, but several states perpetuate myths about unproven drowsy driving countermeasures such as rolling down the window or turning up the radio volume.Most states (45) and the District of Columbia have graduated licensing systems for young people that include a nighttime driving restriction. Seven states have nighttime driving restrictions starting at 10 p.m., as recommended by NSF and a number of traffic safety organizations.There are at least nine states with 16 pending bills that target drowsy driving in various ways.While some states are taking action to get drowsy drivers off the road, many Americans still don't understand the serious impact sleepiness has on driving performance, the NSF said. In fact, the foundation's 2008 Sleep in America Poll found that almost a third of working Americans reported driving drowsy at least once in the previous month.
The NSF's annual Drowsy Driving Prevention Week is designed to boost public awareness and increase advocacy around the issue. Don't Be Late For Your Driving Test
If you are, and by late I mean by as little as five minutes, the test examiner will cancel your test and you will lose the test fee you have already paid. It will then be up to you to book another test, and wait for another test date to become available.
The Start of the Test
At the start of the practical test, the examiner will come out and call your name. You will then be asked to read and sign the insurance and residency declarations while the examiner inspects your documentation. If all is in order, you will then be asked to walk to your car.
You are now able to have your driving instructor accompany you on your practical test. This decision is entirely your own to make. The instructor is not permitted to help you or assist you in any way while the test is being conducted.
Eyesight Test
Before getting to your car, the examiner will ask you to stop and read a new style number plate at a 20m or an old-style number plate at a distance of 20.5m. If you fail to do this, the exam will go no further, you will fail.
Show Me and Tell Me Questions
At the car, the examiner will ask you two questions from the show and tell question bank. To see all the show me, tell me questions and answers. Fail to answer either question correctly and you will score one minor fault.
The Driving Part of the Practical Test
The examiner will now ask you to get into the car and prepare yourself for the driving part of the practical test. Get in and perform a brief cockpit drill. Don't forget to put your seatbelt on.
The examiner will then give you the following instructions:
'During the test I would like you to follow the road ahead at all times, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise, or I ask you to make a turn, which I will do in good time. When you are ready, move off.'
You should now start the engine and move off. To be successful and to pass, you must drive safely and demonstrate through your driving that you have a sound knowledge of the Highway Code. Don't worry if you make a mistake, keep calm and continue driving. Unless you make a serious or dangerous fault, or make a less serious mistake a number of times, you won't fail the practical test. The duration of the test will be up to 40 minutes and will cover a variety of roads and traffic situation. You will have to deal with roundabouts, crossroads, pedestrian crossings and where possible dual carriageways, rural and residential roads. Test centre's do have specific routes that they follow, but these routes are designed to include the widest range of driving possible in that area, and to give a consistent standard of testing across the whole country.
You will have to perform one of the following driving manoeuvres and show that you can control the car safely and correctly: bay park, parallel park, turn in the road, reversing round a corner.
You may also have to perform an emergency stop.
If you come to a junction or roundabout and the examiner gives you no instruction, you must follow the road ahead, for example go straight ahead at a roundabout.
If the examiner gives you an instruction which you are unsure about, ask them to repeat it.
Independent Driving

August 26, 1997: 1:54 p.m. ET Three fatal collisions in 10 weeks have federal officials worried NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The Federal Railroad Administration on Tuesday said it has launched around-the-clock safety inspections of the nation's largest railroad, Union Pacific, after three collisions in 10 weeks left seven people dead.
The agency said it found "critical safety deficiencies" at the railroad, which has 36,000 miles of lines crossing the western two-thirds of the country.
"Immediate action across the entire UP system is necessary," said FRA Administrator Jolene Molitoris. The USAge of the electronic labs allows you to enhanced ease of access and decreasing operating expense.The FRA is part of the Department of Transportation.
John Bromley, a spokesman for the Omaha, Neb.-based company, insisted the railroad is safe and that the number of accidents is statistically small.

The string of fatal crashes started June 2 in Devine, Texas, when two freight trains collided head-on, killing two crew members and two stowaways.
Then on July 2 in Kenefick, Kan., a freight train crashed into the sixth car of a passenger train, killing the freight train's engineer.
Four unattended locomotives moving at 60 mph in Fort Worth, Texas, barreled into another train as it left the yard, killing the engineer and engineer pilot.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the FRA are investigating the accidents.
Bromley said human error was to blame in the first two crashes and the likely cause of the third. He pointed out that the railroad operates 2,000 trains a day.
"Any accident is an accident too many,'' he said. "The common thread was human error."
Teams of 60 federal and state investigators will do continual, 24-hour inspections within the next 10 days in Chicago, Denver, Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Omaha, Pocatello, Idaho, Portland, Ore., Sacramento, and San Antonio.
Inspectors will ride with some UP crews on trains throughout the system and specialists will oversee operations in Omaha and Denver. Inspectors will also interview local rail officials, train crews, labor representatives managers and contractors.
Molitoris will meet later this week in Washington, D.C. with Jerry Davis, chief executive of UP, and other company executives.
The FRA hopes to have a preliminary update within 48 hours, Bolger said.
Efforts to reach someone at the United Transportation Union, which represents 60 percent of the company's workers, were unsuccessful Tuesday.
The company and the union in July announced a joint effort to improve safety. Part of the plan included derailment and injury prevention.
UP last year merged with Southern Pacific in a $5.4 billion deal that created the nation's largest railroad. The FRA said it has identified problems in SP's train control, operating practices, training, and inspections since the merger.
Bromley doesn't think the merger, or questions about Southern Pacific's safety record, played a role in the crashes. All three accidents took place on UP rail lines. The companies are still operating separately in Texas, he added.
"We really haven't physically merged the railroads at all," Bromley said.
But David Bolger, a spokesman for the agency, said investigators will study the merger's impact on safety.
"You're merging two cultures: two corporate cultures and two safety cultures," Bolger said. "We want to make sure the safety culture is consistent across the new railroad."

Are Men Better Drivers or Are Women Better Drivers?
With the exception of a study on parking that was done in the UK that I referenced near the end of this article that related mainly to spatial skills, all the statistics in this article and the conclusions made as a result of those statistics relate entirely to drivers in the United States.
However some of my readers want to relate the provided statistics to their own countries outside of the U.S. for some reason. I am not sure why. I would never attempt to relate statistics from Singapore, or South Africa, or anywhere outside the U.S. to people living here. It would make no sense at all. Other cultures and people are different and very few people live in anything close to the culture we have here in the U.S. I am not saying our culture is better or worse than any other countrys culture, only that it is different.
When you compare drivers in India or Japan or Indonesia, or any other country, to drivers in the U.S., you are comparing peaches and avocados. I love them both, but they are nothing alike.
United Kingdom Statistics
There are a couple of my readers who live in the United Kingdom, and they just cannot wrap their minds around the fact that the statistics herein are entirely relatable to the U.S. only, and not to the U.K.
So I thought I would do some quick research and see what sort of statistics I might find on the subject of driving in the United Kingdom, just so these readers of mine might perhaps be more at peace.
Some of the statistics I found were a bit older than I would prefer, but clearly the U.K. does not make a habit of collecting information as frequently and using it to determine their actions in regard to insurance premiums and the like, as much as companies in the U.S.
Keep in mind that England has an area about the size of the state of Wyoming with just under 63 million people somehow all fitting in there.
The statistics I found were from JMW Solicitors LLP who apparently handle many of the auto insurance claims in the U.K., and autoblog.com. Autoblog.com was citing what they described as a recent study done by Carrentals UK. It was posted on November 8, 2012.
Given that at least one of my readers of this article (from the U.K.) is very near stroking out, popping a blood vessel, and maybe even having a heart attack over the statistics relating to male drivers in the U.S., what I found is probably going to push him over the edge. The man is already beside himself after hearing that women are better drivers than men because in his mind women are not better than men at anything.
You see, the findings in studies done in the U.K. regarding who is the safer driver, men or women, is very similar to the statistics in the U.S., though some of them are a bit older. My references for this information can be found in the reference section.
Down To the Nitty Gritty
Scott Burgess (a man) writing for autoblog.com says after examining a recent study by Carrentals UK, Now there's proof that women are the superior drivers.
Burgess further quotes Gareth Robinson (also a man), Managing Director of Carrentals UK as saying, "While men would like to believe they are better than women behind the steering wheel, it is clear to see that male drivers performed worse in terms of speeding fines and penalty points.
Robinson further stated, It seems that while men performed poorly on the questionnaire and typically had a worse track record on the roads, they [still] believed that they were good drivers.
Now that we know more men are cited for moving violations while driving a motor vehicle in the U.K. than women are, what about car crashes?
Well, one study says when women have accidents in the U.K. they are more likely to be fender benders where no one gets hurt. When men in the U.K. pile it up, it is usually because of high speed, and it is more often a serious crash, such as a multi-car accident or a head on collision. Male drivers have more expensive insurance claims than female drivers.
Now the most recent available statistics on car accidents in the U.K.
While women in the U.K. are often branded as bad drivers, statistically women are involved in fewer car accidents than men. In 1995 women drivers were involved in 1.8 million car accidents per million miles driven compared to men drivers who were involved in 2.9 million car accidents per million miles driven.
The reason given for men having more accidents than women is the same in the U.K. as it is in the U.S. It is thought that testosterone encourages male drivers to drive more aggressively and competitively, as well as to take more risks, thus, causing more accidents and most of those accidents are of a very serious nature.
This is backed up by statistics published by Phillips 2007 Atlases stating that men account for 80% of speeding fines in the UK. Research by road safety charity Brake lists the more reckless driving habits carried out by men:
44% of men have used a mobile phone while driving compared to just 30% of women.20% of men have fallen asleep at the wheel compared to just 6% of women.22% of men revealed they would drive at 7am following a heavy night of drinking compared to just 11% of women.
In addition, 93% of convicted drunk drivers in 2003 were male. Men are also three times as likely as women to be involved in a fatal car accident and they are more likely to kill pedestrians while operating a motor vehicle.
So much for trying to ease my British readers pain at discovering men are the worse drivers. These are the most recent statistics I could find and I spent more than an hour trying to find newer ones, although the statistical findings of the Carrentals UK study were recent -- from 2012. Not only were statistics for drivers in the U.K. hard to find, there were not many of them either. Let us hope that male British drivers have improved over the last few years.
One thing that has changed is that more women in the U.K. are getting drivers licenses and fewer men are getting them. That is also comparable to the U.S. with the exception that here there are already more women than men with drivers licenses and women are driving about the same amount of miles here as men do. In the U.K. overall men still hold about 10% more drivers licenses than women, and still drive about twice as many miles as women.

As I mentioned, at a Concours d'Elegance every car is a champion in some regard. You don't see cars that, "still need a little work," or that would be perfect, "except for that tiny bubble of rust beneath the rear fender."In much the same way that the most prestigious dog shows in the country feature the champions from all the other dog shows leading up to it, aConcours d'Elegance car show only features the best of the best in each category.
Therefore, what is ultimately judged is which car, out of each category, isthe best champion. It is this high level of superior automotive examples that make aConcours d'Elegance auto show different from a run-of-the-mill car show. A car show shows cars. Nice cars, yes. Outstanding cars, often. But when you go to aConcours d'Elegance event, you can be assured that each automobile will blow your mind.

The Winter Park, FL Concours d'Elegance
I recently attended the 2014Winter Park, FL Concours d'Elegance. The entry fee was $20 if tickets were purchased in advance, and $25 at the gate. An estimated eighty-thousand guests attended the show and the quantity and quality of automobiles on display did not disappoint.
I looked at every single vehicle and many were such pristine versions, I felt as if I were in a car lover's dream. The Winter Park iteration of this legendary car show was held on the fairways of the Winter Park Country Club, which is located at the end of Park Avenue.
Just walking down Park Avenue can be a car show in itself. This fancy-schmancy part of Orlando is home to Rollins College, many fine restaurants, boutique hotels, and high-end retail shops. The street side parking spots are filled with Ferraris, Jaguars, Porsches, and the occasional perfectly restored vintage VW Bus.
A visit to Winter Park, FL at any time would be fun; a visit during this cool event was a special treat for the senses.

The Ultimate Car
What is the ultimate car? This is a question that could be (and probably will be) debated for centuries. From the perennial Ford Vs Chevy arguments that span generations, to the Ferrari Vs Lamborghini camps that become divisions of national pride, there will always be opinions about which car is the finest.
Personally I am partial to the Ford Mustang. Perhaps because that was my first car (a 1987 Mustang Convertible). Whatever the reason I just love a perfect Mustang. (Yes, I am one of those people who rewinds the scene in the movie Gone In Sixty Seconds when Memphis Raines first sees Eleanor.) One fantastic automobile at the Winter Park show was a 1970Mustang Mach1 Fastback that looked better than brand new. While every car at this show was a standout, the1970 Mustang Mach1 Fastback would be very near my top choice as that show's ultimate car.
Oh, but then again, there was a blue1967 Mustang GT500 that looked amazing. And the Lamborghini Aventador. Or maybe the McClaren. Well here are the rest of the pics. You be the judge.

Summary
So to summarize and answer our original question: is the Concours d'Elegance the ultimate car show? Well perhaps. The fact is that any car show bearing the Concours name is likely to feature the finest of the finest in automotive excellence. In my experience, having attended a few of these shows, most recently the event in Winter Park, Florida, they are nothing short of spectacular.
Everyone has different tastes. Some people love old gangster cars from the 1930s, some love Italian exotics like the Ferraris or Lamborghinis, and some like good old-fashioned American Muscle, like the mustangs, or the Oldsmobile 442. But if you want to see the finest examples of cars from each and every category, then aConcours d'Elegance fine auto show would definitely foot the bill.
Every event and each venue will be different of course, and therefore, each car show will always be unique. But if it is high-quality, classic, modern, and one-of-a-kind automobiles you are looking for, then aConcours d'Elegance car show will certainly satisfy.
